Vacancy for Operations Manager: Beit Emanuel Synagogue

Beit Emanuel Synagogue, based in Parktown, Johannesburg, has a vacancy for an Operations Manager.

This is a full-time and the most senior administrative staff position at the synagogue. We would ideally like the post to be filled as soon as possible. Salary will be commensurate with experience.  Working Hours from 8:00 – 17:00 Mondays to Thursdays and 8:00 – 14:00 on Fridays. Below find a list of the selection criteria for the post:

  • Applicant must have been an active, paid-up member of a Progressive congregation for at least five years
  • Applicant should demonstrate familiarity with the issues and dynamics of the wider SA Progressive Movement and exhibit experience and promote a good working relationship with key players in the Progressive Movement in SA as well as  have knowledge of organisations like :






o   SA Zionist Federation

  • Extensive experience serving / working with executive of a Progressive Synagogue committee strongly recommended
  • Previous experience on the executive of the Beit Emanuel Management Committee a big plus

o   Will be required to attend all Exco and Mancom meetings and take minutes

  • Needs to understand the key policy issues, show foresight, be able to recommend policy directives to the committee and assist the committee in setting the strategic direction and vision for the synagogue

o   Direct, motivate and suggest congregational activities. Work together with:

  • Rabbinic Staff
  • Management Committee and Board of Guardians
  • Religion School
  • Sisterhood / United Sisterhood
  • Ability to work harmoniously with other people in a team situation;

o   Supervision, briefing and management of shul staff

  • Shul office administrator
  • Cleaning staff
  • Gardening staff
  • Kitchen staff / Catering Committee

o   Provide operational support and assistance to – and liaision with the Rabbi

  • Available to provide logistical and technical support for Beit Emanuel events after hours, on weekends and Jewish and public holidays.
  • Meticulous, with an eye for detail and the ability to at his / her own discretion deal with day-to-day operational issues and report to Management Committee / Executive as necessary
  • Good written communication skills, in order to document standards, policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with social media platforms so as to expand our use of them for marketing purposes and greater exposure, such as:

o    Facebook

o   Google Plus

o   Twitter

o   YouTube

o   WordPress (Updating of the synagogue website)

  • Familiarity with the software needed to manage:

o    the synagogue’s mailing lists

o   marketing databases

o   office automation

o   Google  Groups

o   Groupspaces

o   MS Office

o   Rakefet synagogue management software

  • Thorough knowledge and ability to set up other appropriate systems for administration
  • Ability to edit and also produce the weekly Bulletin


  • Applicant should provide references from three paid-up shul members who are previous Mancom/Guardian members and at least one senior person from another progressive synagogue
  • Applicant should be able to manage general maintenance of the building and grounds
