Beit Emanuel Sisterhood
Beit Emanuel Sisterhood is a small group of dedicated ladies (and men) who assist the synagogue with various activities as well as helping several outreach projects.
We cater for special Brochas for Bnei Mitzvot, Aufrufs, Baby Namings and for any other special occasion one would like to celebrate with a brocha.
The sisterhood assists the synagogue with arranging the annual Pesach Sedar, High Holy Day dinners as well as the various festivals celebrated throughout the year.
Over the years we have assisted many outreach projects and worked with our umbrella Sisterhood with their projects which include The Jewish Family Assist and Our Children’s Feeding Scheme.
Currently we are assisting Hughs Haven, a day centre for young children whose parents are either unemployed or are HIV suffers or are street vendors and who need a place of safety for their children during the day. We assist the Princess Alice Adoption Home, and the Johannesburg Physiological Council Services for traumatised children and their families.
To raise funds we have a 50/50 club. Members make a R50.00 donation to the sisterhood annually and every month a winner is drawn, with the prize split between the Sisterhood and winner. The more participants, the bigger the prize pot! Forms are available in the foyer of the synagogue should you wish to make your donation.
Bi- monthly food collections are held at Norwood Pick ‘n Pay Hypermarket. These collections assist in supplying food to the children across all our projects.
Sisterhood also hold book sales throughout the year and we appeal to anyone (especially book clubs) to donate used books in saleable condition. These can be dropped off at the office marked BES at the synagogue.
Every Thursday a small group of ladies meet at the synagogue where they are taught the useful skill of sewing. Over the last year, with the assistance of one of our congregants, beautiful quilts were made.
We are always in need off assistance with all our projects and fundraising. We have a tremendous amount of fun and sense of reward while serving and helping the less privileged communities.
The continued success of our projects are dependent on the continued volunteering of congregants and friends. We urge you and welcome anyone who is interested in joining and strengthening our Sisterhood.
