Beit Emanuel has been honoured with an invitation from the US Reform movement to participate in a global project in which one Progressive community in each of 24 time-zones sends its own unique New Year message to other communities around the world, using social media.
The project will be part of the Selichot Service, to be held on the Thursday evening (10th September) before Rosh Hashanah (Sunday, 13th September). Selichot are prayers of apology for sins of the past year, and requests for forgiveness, which are recited in the week immediately before Rosh Hashanah, continuing to Yom Kippur.
The Blessings Around The World project aims to promote Progressive Judaism as one big global family, and to celebrate diversity, with each community presenting its own unique culture. Rabbi Shaked will compose the basic messages that Beit Emanuel will pass on to the world, to which others are encouraged to add. We will first accept the blessings from the previous time zone, then record our own event on social media, to be handed over to the next time zone. Meanwhile, a global audience of Progressive Jews will be watching and adding their own comments.
Our chairman, Professor Merle Williams, would like to encourage as many people as possible to attend. You don’t need to know anything about social media – this will be a traditional service. It is a great privilege that Beit Emanuel been chosen, and the project gives us an opportunity to present our congregation in the best possible light to the rest of the world.
When: Thursday evening, 10th September, at 5.30pm.
