JTalk this week: Irwin Manoim on how the progressive movement began in South Africa

Following the service on Shabbat mornings, Beit Emanuel hosts an interesting and informed speaker on a thought-provoking topic. Sessions run for approx. an hour starting at approx. 11.15 am.

28 February – Irwin Manoim How the Progressive movement began in South Africa. Reform was an alien concept in the conservative South African Jewish community. The Progressive movement ran into strong opposition before holding its first meeting. Yet the movement not only took off, it grew at remarkable speed, adopting principles (like gender equality) which were ground-breaking for their time. Irwin Manoim has been researching the little-known history of our movement in South Africa.
